David was born in Gloversville, lived at home until the age of 3, and then grew up in foster care.
At 14, David entered the New York School for the Blind in Batavia, NY, where he first learned to play the drums. David’s counselor at the school wrote in a report that David’s dreams were too big, he would never be in a band or release CDs, and he needed to face reality. David graduated and returned to Fulton County, moving into a home supported by Lexington in Gloversville.
David never gave up his dream of being in a band. That dream came true in 2003 when Flame was formed. He was a key player in the band’s creation and even came up with the name “Flame” to honor the Special Olympics torch, which stands for hope and inspiration.
David’s extraordinary ability to play the drums despite being blind is one of many gifts that he loves to share with others. He is also a natural vocalist with the ability to create masterful harmonies for any song he hears.
In addition to his love for music, David is a devoted Catholic who loves to share his faith. Flame made it possible for him to achieve a lifelong goal when he traveled with them to Italy to perform at the 19th International Festival of Different Abilities, and they took a detour to visit the Vatican in Rome.
David said, “I am the happiest when people who listen to our songs are happy. I want to keep the flame of hope burning!”
