FLAME RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Flame, Lexington’s internationally-renowned rock band, is the recipient of a National Honor for the National Historic Recognition Project! The Project is a collaboration of a dozen national and regional organizations that recognized the key groups and individuals who have contributed to the transformation of the field of intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) within the U.S. over the past 20 years. Nominations for this recognition were received from across the nation.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic will preclude in-person gatherings to recognize all the extraordinary individuals, groups and organizations who were honored with this recognition, you can read all about the honorees’ contributions in a commemorative booklet available here: https://bit.ly/35lhsGG

“When Flame was formed in 2003 as a program of the Arc Lexington, we knew their message and music would be impactful. But now 17 years later, we had no idea that they would go on to perform across the country as well as internationally, and change the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).  For the band to be recognized as a National Honoree through the National Historic Recognition Project, alongside people like George H.W. and George W. Bush and Ted and Bob Kennedy, really solidifies their impact not only in the field of I/DD, but also in the world.  We are thrilled about the recognition,” said executive director Shaloni Winston.

“Flame’s mission is to spread hope and inspiration through their music to people with developmental disabilities and beyond,” said band manager Maria Nestle. “Every time we perform, we take the opportunity to talk about how the band and their music has changed the lives of these talented musicians and how they hope it inspires others to dream and achieve their goals.  It is so humbling to receive this National Honor and be recognized for the band’s contribution to the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities. ” Nestle said.
